Summary of work
MnDOT work
- Resurface Hwy 71 from just south of Viking Drive to the Hwy 212 intersection
- Upgrade existing sidewalk, ramps and adjacent driveways to current Americans with Disabilities Act standards
- Add new sidewalk to create connections with existing sidewalk
- Replace portions of existing concrete curb and gutter and underground storm pipe from Ash Avenue to Hwy 212 to improve drainage during rainfall events
- Regrade ditches and replace several culverts from Viking Drive to Ash Avenue to improve drainage
- Add a bypass lane at Viking Drive (southbound)
City of Olivia work
- Add flashing pedestrian crossing at Chestnut Avenue
- Construct trail from Chestnut Avenue to Viking Drive
Traffic impacts
- Hwy 71 will be open to two-way traffic during most of construction
- Drivers can expecte temporary lane and shoulder closures, along with other minor traffic impacts
- Pedestrians will encounter temporary sidewalk and ramp closures
- A detour will be in place for about one month during construction; it is currently scheduled for August 8 through September 9; see detour map above
- Everyone is encouraged to allow extra travel time and watch for traffic sign instructions and flagging crews
- Homes and businesses along the project route will remain accessible
Project update
August 5, 2022
- Work continues with removals of old materials and grading new sidewalks
- Crews are working under traffic - please use caution in the work zone
- Beginning Monday, August 8, the road will close and the detour posted above will be in place
