About this project
Although MnDOT and its partners are currently in the early stages of an extensive, multi-year environmental review of Hwy 252 and I-94 between 4th St. North in Minneapolis and Hwy 610 in Brooklyn Park, there is a need to address safety needs before that study is complete. The environmental review process will take several years to complete and any large-scale construction on Hwy 252 is not anticipated until 2026 at the earliest. So, in the meantime, MnDOT will make interim safety improvements in this area while the environmental review is underway. A summary of those safety improvements is listed below.
Summary of work
Remove free right turn in the southwest corner of Hwy 252 and 66th Ave.
Install advance warning flashers on southbound Hwy 252 for the signal at 85th Ave.
Install “Signal Ahead” pavement markings on northbound Hwy 252 for the 66th Ave. signal
Install new pedestrian crosswalk pavement markings at 66th, 70th, 73rd and 81st avenues, and Brookdale Dr.
Deploy speed feedback trailers for short durations to monitor if traffic changes have an effect on speeds
Upgrade and add additional “One Way” signing to increase motorists’ awareness of one-way traffic along the divided highway
Make crossing times longer for pedestrians
Add more signal heads on Hwy 252 at Humboldt Ave./81st Ave.
