Hwy 74 roadwork begins Aug. 16 north of Elba to return road to gravel

ELBA, Minn. — Hwy 74 motorists north of Elba in Winona County will encounter construction work beginning Monday, Aug. 16 as Minnesota Department of Transportation maintenance crews convert the short stretch of road to gravel.

The work is being done to remove the current surface of the 4-mile stretch north of Elba. The deteriorating driving surface will be converted to gravel, which then connects to a longer stretch of gravel on Hwy 74 up to Weaver in Wabasha County.

Work is expected to take about one month. The gravel work is being done because the maintenance crews are unable keep up with how the road is deteriorating and there is not sufficient funding to do reconstruct and pave the road.

Motorists may encounter lane closures or lane shifts, uneven road surfaces, equipment and other unexpected obstacles when driving near or through work zones. MnDOT advises motorists to:

  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times
  • Go hands-free and minimize other distractions (e.g., don’t eat or drink while driving)
  • Follow posted speed limits; the fine for speeding in a work zone is $300
  • Avoid making lane changes within work zones
