Traffic switch starts tomorrow as part of US 71 improvement project in Willmar

Southbound travelers should allow extra time

WILLMAR, Minn. – A traffic switch for the concrete repair project will take place late tomorrow, Tuesday, August 24th, as part of the US 71 improvement project.  Currently, traffic is traveling southbound in the left lane from Point Lake to the south end of the project.  Starting late tomorrow, southbound traffic will be switched to the right lane.  The left lane will be closed for repairs.  After the traffic switch is complete, the temporary detour for southbound US 71 north of the project will be taken down.

Current traffic impacts

  • Southbound US 71 traffic is detoured at CR 27
  • Northbound US 71 traffic is reduced to a single lane from CR 24/23rd St. NE to just past CR 90/37th Ave. NE
  • Southbound US 71 traffic is reduced to a single lane from CR 24 to just shy of the US 71/Highway 23 split
  • Northbound access to CR 24 is closed
  • The highway crossing at CR 90/27th Ave. NE is closed

Travelers are encouraged to watch message boards along the corridor for upcoming traffic changes and allow extra time for travel. As road work will be next to the traffic lane, drivers should also watch for construction equipment breaking for, entering, and exiting the work zone, and not follow equipment into the work zone to avoid damage to their vehicles.
