Hwy 74 reopens south entrance of Whitewater State Park after historic bridge rehabilitation

ST. CHARLES, Minn. — Hwy 74 has re-opened north of St. Charles into Whitewater State Park after being detoured for a historic bridge rehabilitation project, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The construction project was in Whitewater State Park near the south entrance.

The work on the four bridges included repair of floors and walls. Work began in February.

Whitewater State Park remained open during the work and motorists accessed the visitor center, camping areas, majority of trails and other amenities from the north entrance of the park on Hwy 74.

Environmental Associates Inc. is the prime contractor on the $4.7 million project.

Motorists may encounter lane closures or lane shifts, uneven road surfaces, equipment and other unexpected obstacles when driving near or through work zones. MnDOT advises motorists to:

  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times
  • Go hands-free and minimize other distractions (e.g., don’t eat or drink while driving)
  • Follow posted speed limits; the fine for speeding in a work zone is $300
  • Avoid making lane changes within work zones
