Ever wondered what happens after you click “apply?” Here’s the inside scoop:

  1. MnDOT Jobs are posted on mn.gov/careers. All applications are received through this website.
  2. After the posting close date (listed on the job posting) Human Resources reviews all applications for minimum qualifications.
    1. If you meet the minimum qualifications, your resume will be forwarded to the hiring manager.
      • Hiring manager will also review, and select interview candidates.
    2. If you are missing one or more of the minimum qualifications, you will get an email from Human Resources.
      • You have the opportunity to "appeal" the determination. An appeal is an update to your resume, to clarify missing qualifications. The hiring process continues even while you are working through your appeal, so you want to submit quickly to ensure a hire has not already been made. To appeal:
        1. Respond to the email from Human Resources, and ask what requirements you were missing.
        2. Once Human Resources emails back, if you meet these requirements, but neglected them from your resume, send a new copy of your resume demonstrating these additional skills.
        3. Human Resources will determine if your amended resume meets the requirements.
  3. After the interview, the hiring manager will select a finalist. That finalist will then go through checks appropriate to the position before receiving a final offer. These checks include:
    • Criminal background checks
    • Past employment reference checks
    • Pre-employment physical
    • Driver’s license checks
  4. If checks are cleared, then a final offer will be made, and other interviewed candidates will be notified.

My Activities Tab

  • Use the “My Activities” tab within the application system to check your status on all jobs you have applied to.

Be patient

  • Be patient in hearing back on the job, but if you haven’t heard anything a few weeks after the job posting closes (you likely will!), connect with the HR professional listed on the posting to learn your status.

Keep applying

  • Apply for as many jobs as you’re interested in. We only consider you for the jobs that you specifically apply to.

Update your resume

  • Always update your resume to correspond with the job you are applying to. We use resumes to determine if you have the required qualifications. If we don’t see them on your resume, we cannot assume that you have them.

Set up a job-search agent

  • If you want to learn about job opportunities as they arise, set up a job-search agent.

Be a STAR interviewee

  • MnDOT uses behavioral interviews. To prepare, think about past experiences and how they relate to the position you are interviewing for. Practice them, by describing them with the situation you were in, the task you needed to complete, the action you took, and the result of your actions. (Remember: Situation, Task, Action, Result = STAR.)
